Change is sometimes - but not always - about progress. One hundred years hence I'm sure there will be other changes that have been argued against which everyone take for granted.<br /><br />Why would men want to give women the vote? How much better to keep women under their thumb, without power under the law, subservient members of society? Inheritance taxes slowed the prosperity of the nation's wealthiest families, just as death duties did here in Britain and the end of primogeniture did in France. The leisure class will not have thought this a good idea.
